As of June 2009, the Ministry of National Defense has set the military service to 9 months for the Army, 12 months for the Navy and the Air Force)

The only thing that i am not sure of is the Navy and Air force.Both of them have been considered to be easier for someone to serve than the Army (at least for the basic service) , thus the majority of the recruits had to have a type of connection to be among the "lucky" ones to serve there.But ,as Pr0xy has already posted, they recently made some changes.Since the military service has been lowered to only 9 months for the Army , the only way from now on to join the Navy or Air force is to be a "professional private" (i dont know if this term makes any sense to u but i couldnt find any better to match the term we use in Greece).No matter where i go though , i will soon have my share of Pr0xy 's image of "kicking barbarians into the pit of death"

A professional Private eh... And so the only way to get into either of those is to have connections? I see..

That used to be the case before the changes.Of course i cant know for sure if all those who served there had a kind of connection (maybe a small percentage was just lucky enough to be chosen) , but that was the widely spread idea.But as i have already said , since this summer a few things have been changed.One of them (if i am not horribly wrong) is the fact that u have to be a professional private to be able to serve either the Navy or the Air force.
Some info about the professional privates :
The minimum service is seven years , unless of course they choose to quit.During this period they have a salary.After this period they have to pass some exams to become regulars.If they succeed its like a regular profession.The more years they stay,the higher ranks/salaries they gain , they have a pension when they retire etc

@ Underhand. So can a person move up from Private to Professional Private? start out in say the army and then move to either Air force or Navy and then work their way up from there?

I dont know exactly how this works and i dont really care to find out but its not like a promotion of any kind.Its not like u start from the Army and then u move to Air or Navy , there are "professional privates" in all three forces.To keep this simple the "professional privates" are the regulars of each force.It is like any other profession with a salary ,as i have already mentioned, and they can have a variety of jobs depending on their skills i guess (they can vary from tasks inside a camp to paperwork in an office).
