I DID NOT WRITE THIS!

I don't know about you, but I love free stuff. The best thing about
this, is that there is tons of free stuff on the internet. Here I'm
going to list some cool programs that can be downloaded and used for
free. I'm not throwing these in any particular order, just in the order
that they pop into my mind.

Keep in mind that I may have not played or used some of the things that
are listed. Some things you'll have to check out yourself.

Oh, and yeah. I voted 5 for my own thread! Muahahaha!

Please use your own judgement! If something on this list looks fishy to
you, please let me know. I don't have the patience to download every
single program on this list.

To let you know what I have tried on this list, I will put characters after the title and URL.

X = I have used it and I don't really have a good or bad opinion about it. Try it, you might like it.

XX = I have used it and I personally recommend it!

O = I have used it and I don't like it. Doesn't mean you won't, though.

Just because something has a XX or O next to it does not mean it's good
or bad, it's just my opinion. If something looks interesting to you,
give it a try.

MULTIMEDIA APPLICATIONS

The GIMP - http://www.gimp.org/ XX

---

The GIMP is practically photoshop for the poor. You can do all kinds of
junk, such as apply filters and effects. There are tons of other neat
stuff as well. If you're a comic maker and you're stuck with MS Paint,
this is a good program to take it's place.

GIMPShop - http://plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241 X

---

GIMPShop is pretty much just GIMP, but with a more photoshop friendly interface. I recommend this over the original GIMP.

Paint.net - http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/ XX

---

Paint.net is another great image editing/creating program. While it may
not have quite as many features as the GIMP, it is much easier to use.
Think of this as MS Paint on steroids.

Pivot Stick Animator - http://www.geocities.com/peter_bone_uk/pivot.html XX

---

Pivot Stick Animator allows you to create your own stick cartoons
without having to deal with flash or any other program as such. It's
possible to make them in 5 minutes, but if you really want to create
something worth watching, you're going to have to spend some time on
it. It can get quite addicting, which almost makes you forget how time
consuming it can be.

Easy Toon - http://www.superfundungeonrun.com/easytoon/ XX

---

Easy Toon is very much like Pivot Stick Animator, but is much more
challenging to make something compelling with. And as sad as it always
is, the more complex something is, the more possibilties it brings. If
you were to master this program, you could make some pretty kickass
stuff!

GameCam - http://www.planetgamecam.com/ XX

---

GameCam is an alternative to the game recording program Fraps. While it
DOES have a watermark, and last time I checked it doesn't have any
limit to the length of videos you can record.

Take One (Recommended by Rutilant) - http://www.take1.de/ XX

---

Take One is a free GIF animator. Don't let the cheesiness of the
website fool you, it's quite a good program. Check out the site for
more information.

Open Office (Recommended by I_love_garrysmod) - http://www.openoffice.org/ XX

---

Open Office is pretty much everything from MS Office, but for free... and better! Check out the website for more information.

Endorphin: Learning Edition - http://www.naturalmotion.com/pages/le.htm

---

Endorphin: Learning Edition is a free physics/animation program by NaturalMotion. Check out the website for more information.

Wings 3D - http://www.wings3d.com/

---

Wings 3D is a free, open-source modeling program. I don't know a whole
bunch about modeling (Actually, I know next to nothing), but it seems
that if you're looking for a free modeling program this wouldn't be a
bad place to start.

Anim8or - http://www.anim8or.com/main/index.html

---

Anim8or is another free modeling/animation program that, from what I
have read, is one of the simplest around. That being said, I think it's
a safe bet to take that THIS would be a good place to start. Also, some
of the stuff on the main page may not be all that great, but there
really is some impressive stuff in the gallery section.

Blender3D - http://www.blender3d.com/cms/Home.2.0.html

---

Yet another 3D modeling program. Like I said, I know nothing about modeling, so you're going to have to check the site yourself.

IrfanView - http://www.irfanview.com/ X

---

IrfanView is a good imageviewer/editor. You can make slideshows, apply
effects, and if I recall you can also make gifs with it. Check out the
link above for more information.

Pixia - http://park18.wakwak.com/~pixia/ XX

---

Yet another image editor created by some japanese guy. I check the
program out, and I was rather impressed. While the site may not be of
the highest quality, don't let that turn you off from the program
itself. Check out the link above for more information.

Terragen (Recommended by Cablekid) - http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/ X

---

Terrigen is a program that creates realistic environments. It's
something that many people use to create their own skyboxes for
HL1/HL2/other FPS games.

Artpad (Recommended by Whazat!!!) - http://artpad.art.com/artpad/painter/ X

---

Artpad is a very impressive site that lets you paint just as you would
with actual paint. You can also see the way people have drawn or
painted their work. Probably a good way to learn new drawing techniques.

DAZ Studio - http://www.daz3d.com/program/studio/1_0index.php

---

"Free 3d posing and animation software.

DAZ|Studio allows you to easily create beautiful digital art. You can
use this software to load in people, animals, vehicles, buildings,
props, and accessories to create digital scenes. DAZ|Studio includes
two pre-configured scenes ready to "Load & Render" within
DAZ|Studio. Double-click on the scene thumbnails inside of DAZ|Studio,
and everything will come on screen posed, lit, and ready to create a
stunning digital image." - http://www.software4free.org/

Art of Illusion - http://www.artofillusion.org/

---

Art of Illusion is a free, open-source modeling and rendering program
which is written entirely in Java. It claims that the latest version is
stable and powerful enough to take on high-end animation.

3DCanvas - http://www.amabilis.com/

---

Yet another free modeling program for you to choose from.

Apophysis (Recommended by .jason) - http://www.apophysis.org/

---

"Apophysis, a program that allows you to create really cool looking
wallpapers. It is a freeware fractal flame editor, whatever that
means." - .jason

Jahshaka - http://www.jahshaka.org/

---

"The worlds first OpenSource Realtime Editing and Effects System.
Jahshaka takes advantage of the power of OpenGL and OpenML to give its
users exceptional levels of performance. We currently support Linux,
OsX, Irix and Windows, and Solaris is on the way! Jahshaka is licenced
to the public under the GNU GPL agreement." - The website.

Inkscape - http://inkscape.org/ X

---

Inkscape is an open-source vector graphics editor, which could be seen
an alternative to programs such as Adobe illustrator or CoralDraw.
Check out the website for more information.

Lego Digital Designer (Recommended by mrchoas58) - http://www.lego.com/eng/factory/design/

---

I wasn't really sure where to throw this , so I put in the art section.
This program allows you to create your own lego models, and if you'd
like, you can even upload to the lego website and buy everything you'd
need to make the model in real life!

ArtRage - http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html XX

---

This is an impressive program that allows you to create realistic
looking drawings on your computer. While there is both a free and full
edition, the free version has some pretty nice features, and has a very
sexy look to it.

ZD Soft Screen Recorder (Recommended by hairymuffin) - http://www.all4you.dk/FreewareWorld/...der-32056.html XX

---

"Soft Screen Recorder (Like fraps, but for recording things like video tutorials)" - hairymuffin.

PhotoPlus 6 - http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/sof...us/default.asp

---

"PhotoPlus 6 is the fun photo editing software that brings professional
image editing to everyone with just a few clicks of the mouse. This
free download enables beginners and professionals alike to produce
incredible images for print, multimedia and the web." - The website.

AbiWord - http://www.abisource.com/

---

AbiWord is a free word processing application. Check out the link for more information.

Notepad 2 - http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html

---

"The original Notepad shipped with Windows is probably the handiest
program of all times, small, fast, without frills! Notepad2 tries to
follow this principle, it's a small, fast and free text editor with
syntax highlighting for HTML and other common languages." - Website.

WebPlus 6 - http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/sof...us/default.asp

---

"Whether you’re looking to create a website to promote your club, hobby
or business or you just want to find out how you can put your favorite
holiday photos online, WebPlus 6 is exactly what you need. Explore the
endless possibilities of designing eye-catching web pages when you
download this free web design superstar!" - Website.

DrawPlus 4 - http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/sof...us/default.asp

---

"The award-winning DrawPlus 4 is the user-friendly drawing program that
opens up a whole new creative world. With its amazing combination of
powerful functionality, simplicity and professional quality output,
this free drawing software will give you the results you want - fast!"
- Website.

3DPlus 2 - http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/sof...us/default.asp

---

"Imagine being able to transform plain text into stunning 3D works of
art simply with a few clicks of your mouse. You can when you download
3DPlus 2 for free! This fantastic software makes it simple for anyone
to create professional looking 3D effects and animations that really
make an impact." - Website.

Peter - http://www.gemtree.com/peter.htm

---

I wasn't exactly sure where to put this, and I decided to put it here.
Here's a description from the website: "The Peter system is a visual
programming tool designed for a simple and fast generation of the
programs for Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP. Its principal characteristic
is the graphical presentation of the program structure. The program
sections are assembled using the mouse like a jigsaw puzzle. Thanks to
the justification check of the element combinations, carried out
already at the time of the program generation, there is no chance of
syntactic failure origination. The program presentation by means of a
tree structure enables a considerable improvement of the program
lucidity. The creation of the program is quickly becoming extraordinary
easy and flexible."

CamStudio - http://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio XX

---

CamStudio allows you to record whatever you have on your screen at the
time. I'm not sure if it'll record games, but it's worth a try.

Fraps - http://www.fraps.com/

---

Okay, I guess it was kind of biased of me not to include FRAPS earlier
on this list. Fraps allows you to record the games you play and it does
a pretty good job of it quality wise. Chances are it will considerably
drop your FPS and create a huge file, but it always looks nice.

GAMES

Soldat - http://www.soldat.prv.pl/ XX

---

Soldat is a 2D shooter in which the quickest and most effective way to
describe it would be a mix of Counter-Strike, Halo, Tribes, and Super
Smash Brothers mixed into one crazy package. So, you have a jetpack
that helps you get around the level, and a quite a few different
weapons to dish out the destruction with, plus a grenade button for
some quick kills. There is also quite a few different modes and
settings to play with, including good 'ol CTF, classic Deathmatch, and
plenty more. The biggest beef I have with this game, however, is the
weapon balancing. For the most part it isn't really that bad, but when
you're playing CTF against a whole bunch of grenade launcher whores,
you'll see what I'm saying. Also there is a map maker you can download
from the site which is fairly easy to use, so you could have some fun
with that as well. I highly recommend this game to all.

Gunz: The Duel - http://www.gunzonline.com/

---

Gunz is yet another game that I've heard is great, but really don't
know too much about myself. I downloaded it, then couldn't even get on
to a server and didn't bother with it after that. From what I've been
told, it's a massively multiplayer online shooting game that has all
kinds of crazy Matrix shit. Check out the website for more information.

MapleStory - http://www.mapleglobal.com/ O

---

MapleStory is a 2D MMORPG. To be honest, I really don't know much about
this game. I played for about 15 minutes and stopped playing right
there. A bit too repetitive for me, but I know a lot of people who play
and enjoy it. If you want to learn more about the game, you're going to
have to look on the site, which can only be seen on Internet Explorer.

Kal Online - http://www.kalonline.com/ O

---

Okay, I think you get the point that I'm not too big on MMO games. This
is another free MMORPG. I played it, too repetitive for my tastes. Once
again, if you're at all interested, check out the site.

Gunbound - http://www.softnyx.net/ XX

---

Gunbound is pretty much a free version of the classic Worms games, but
less fun. If you don't own a Worms game but need your fix of wormage,
it really isn't too bad of a game. Don't be expecting it to be an equal
to the classic game, or else you'll ruin the entire thing for yourself.

America's Army - http://www.americasarmy.com/ X

---

America's Army is your pretty much your standard realistic shooter, but
you have to go through training bullshit before you can go online. Yay!
I've heard it can be quite realistic, though.

Tribes - http://files.filefront.com/tribes+fu.../fileinfo.html X

---

The classic PC shooter Tribes... for free! What have you got to lose except a small bit of harddrive space? Give it a go.

Quake Construct - http://mods.moddb.com/5373/ X

---

Construct is pretty much Gmod, but can play on computers that couldn't
even dream of playing Gmod. No advanced physics or any of that kind of
jazz, but still good fun.

War Rock - http://www.warrock.net/

---

Yet another game I haven't played, but has gotten quite a bit of praise
from what I've seen some members say on facepunch. Check it out.

Counter-Strike 2D (Recommended by ltp0wer) - http://www.cs2d.com/ X

---

Counter-Strike 2D is pretty much Counter-Strike mixed with the first two GTA games. Give it a go.

Paintball 2 - http://mods.moddb.com/2155/Paintball-2/ X

---

I remember my friend recommending that game to me. It's a paintball
game that runs on an updated Quake 2 engine. Tons of wacky sounds.
Should be fun for a least a little while.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory - http://games.activision.com/games/wolfenstein/ X

---

This is a free, multiplayer-only game, released by the good folks at
id, software that is set in the Wolfenstein universe. I've had very
little expereience with this game, but it seems quite nice for a free
game. Check it out!

Knight Online (Recommended by Brodi) - http://www.knight-online.com.my/ or https://www.knightonlineworld.com/

---

Knight Online is yet another free MMORPG. I've never played it, but
I've heard a few people say that they really enjoy it. Check out the
site for more information.

Nexuiz - http://www.nexuiz.com/ X

---

Nexuiz is a fast-paced, futuristic deathmatch game that is very much
along the lines of Quake 3. With the time that I've spent with it, it's
quite entertaining, with some nice graphics to boot. I'm also impressed
with the game's quality, considering the fact that you're not paying
anything. I highly recommend you give this game a look!

Ogame - http://www.ogame.org/

---

Ogame is a futuristic browser-based game. While I have not played it,
apparently many facepunch members are into it. For more information,
check out the website.

Stick Online (Recommended by mrjsa) - http://www.bigsnoot.net/dustnet/index.html

---

Stick Online is a black and white, sidescrolling MMORPG. Once again,
this is not a game that I've played, but it's popular here on
facepunch. Check out the website for more information!

FreeOrion (Recommended by Monarch) - http://www.freeorion.org/index.php/Main_Page

---

FreeOrion is a free alternative to the game Master of the Orion 3, A galactic conquest game. Be sure to give the like a look!

Enemy Nations (Recommended by Monarch) - http://www.windwardreports.com/enemy_nations.htm

---

Enemy Nations is an old RTS which was apparently "ahead" of the times.
It feels like Civilization mixed with Red Alert. It's now free via
their website.

GTA/GTA2/Wild Metal - http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/gta.html XX

---

The original 2 GTA games are available for free downloads via the
Rockstar website. If you haven't played the original 2, they're a lot
like GTA 3, but with a top-down view. Not quite as fun as GTA 3, but
that's not to say they're bad. Also, Wild Metal is available, but I've
never heard of it or played it. Click the link for more information and
the download links.

Noctis (Recommended by I_love_garrysmod) - http://anywherebb.com/noctis.html

---

Noctis is a 3D space exporation game which apparently has a very large
scale. Billions of stars you can explore and you can even meet
different life-forms.

Madness Combat Interactive - http://mail.rochester.edu/~mabernet/...sh/madness.zip XX

---

Madness Combat Interactive is a single-player, side-scrolling shooter
that is based off the Madness Combat flash animations. This game is
very hard, and could totally use some cover... but it could be fun for
a little while.

Cube - http://sourceforge.net/projects/cube/ X

---

Cube is free shooter much along the lines of the Quake games. While I
don't know too much about it, I've heard it has a very unique mapping
system.

Sauerbraten - http://sauerbraten.sourceforge.net/

---

Sauerbraten is another version of Cube that is currently still in the works.

Block Land - http://www.blockland.us/index.asp X

---

Block Land is a Lego building game that I've been told by some that is
really entertaining. The graphics don't look like they're that hot, but
gameplay is what matters, right? Check out the website for more
information. http://rtb.mocheeze.com/download.htm Return to Blockland mod for Block Land which is said to have many nice features that are not in the original version

Hell of Sand (Recommended by Canesfan) - www.onemorelevel.com/hellofsand.php XX

---

While I don't usually throw web-based games up on this list, this game
is definitely bad enough (As in good enough, because I'm not cool like
'dat) to hand with the big boys. Here is what Canesfan had to say about
it: "That game will really hold you on for at least three days. It has
realistic physics, such as oil burns really fast, water makes plants
grow, but if you mix salt with the water, it won't affect plant growth.
You can make zombies to kill, and set up in random emergency
situations. You can also create sand, and wax, which burns slowly, and
slowly accumulates if it burns over something."

The Ur-Quan Masters (Recommended by Cablekid) - http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ XX

---

I don't know anything about this game, so I'm going to quote Cablekid:
"Cool and fun game based off of the sourcecode for Star Control 2.
Explore the galaxy, find aliens and make your own fleet to battle the
evil empire of aliens or persuade them to join your fleet." Sounds
pretty neat if you ask me. Check the above link for more.

Planeshift (Recommended by The_Dead1) - http://www.planeshift.it/main_01.html

---

Another free MMORPG. Yeah... I'm not exactly sure what to say about it.

Wyvern (Recommended by Game Informer Magazine) - http://www.cabochon.com/

---

Wyvern is another free MMORPG that I got out of an old Game Informer
article (Yay for Mod World). While it may have very, very (very)
outdated graphics, it's said to have some nice character customization,
and plenty of dungeons to master. Check out the link above for more
information

FreeCiv - http://www.freeciv.org/index.php/Freeciv X

---

FreeCiv is a free, open-source game based off the Civilization series.
Civilization is a turn-based strategy game where you take control of a
nation and win in several different ways. Check out the link above for
more information on FreeCiv.

Carnage Blender 2 - http://www.carnageblender.com/

---

I don't know much, if anything, about this game, but I've been told
that it's a turn-based strategy game of some sort. Check out the
website for more information.

Ground Control - http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/groundcontrol/ X

---

The RTS game Ground Control, has been released for free to promote
Ground Control 2. Check out the above link for more information.

StepMania - http://www.stepmania.com/

---

StepMania is pretty much free DDR for your computer! But with this, you
can put on your own music and jazz like that. If you like DDR, check
this out. Keep in mind, that you cannot download a dancepad.

Crack Attack - http://www.nongnu.org/crack-attack/index.html X

---

While it may sound like some sort of crazy druggy busting game, it's
actually a clone of the classic SNES puzzle game - "Tetris Attack",
which is not to be mistaken for Tetris. They both have very different
concepts. In my opinion, Tetris Attack is the most addictive puzzle
game of all time. While Crack Attack may not have all the neat modes
from Tetris Attack intact (Haha), it still has the core gameplay, and
that's what really counts.

Orbiter (Recommended by Cabledude) - http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/orbit.html

---

ORBITER is a free flight simulator that goes beyond the confines of
Earth's atmosphere. Launch the Space Shuttle from Kennedy Space Center
to deploy a satellite, rendezvous with the International Space Station
or take the futuristic Delta-glider for a tour through the solar system
- the choice is yours. But make no mistake - ORBITER is not a space
shooter. The emphasis is firmly on realism, and the learning curve can
be steep. Be prepared to invest some time and effort to brush up on
your orbital mechanics background.

Starport GE (Recommended by Cabledude) - http://www.starportgame.com/

---

The hit game Starport is now available and still 100% free to play. Be
the captain of a space-ship in this fully graphical action game. Carve
out a name for yourself in a multi-player world full of intrigue and
strategy. Team up with other real people, or blast them out of the sky.
Explore distant star systems, establish colonies on alien worlds, hunt
for treasures, and try to become the most famous captain in all the
galaxy!

Open TTD (Recommended by Cabledude) - http://www.openttd.org/index.php

---

popular game originally written by Chris Sawyer. It attempts to mimic
the original game as closely as possible while extending it with new
features.

CodeRED Series - http://red.planetarena.org/

---

The CodeRED games are a series of shooters that take place in a
50s-esqe alien movie setting. While CodeRED: Battle for Earth and
CodeRED: The Martian Chronicles are singleplayer games, CodeRED: Alien
Arena 2006 is a deathmatch style game simlar to that of Quake 3 or the
Unreal games.

Battle for Wesnoth - http://www.wesnoth.org/ X

---

Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game that is set in a
medieval fantasy settings. Check out the website above for more
information.

Racer (Recommended by Cablekid) - http://www.racer.nl/

---

"Racer is a free cross-platform car simulation project (for
non-commercial use), using professional car physics papers to achieve a
realistic feeling. Cars, tracks and such can be created relatively easy
(compared to other, more closed, driving simulations). The 3D and other
file formats are, or should be, documented. Editors and support
programs are also available to get a very customizable and expandable
simulator. OpenGL is used for rendering." - Cablekid

The Universal (Recommended by Cabledude) - http://theuniversal.net/

---

"The Universal is a free, massively multiplayer online game in which
you explore a virtual galaxy with worlds owned, run and populated by
other players. Each world in the galaxy is different, with different
themes and gameplay styles - from persistent economies to arcade-style
blasters." - Cabledude

Second Life - (Recommended by Cabledude) - http://secondlife.com/

---

"An online society within a 3D world where you can explore, build,
socialize, and participate in their own economy. (note, this game is a
pay to play if you want a Premium account, but a basic account is free
as long as you provide either a Phone Number/Service, or a valid credit
card.)" - Cabledude

Liero Xtreme (Recommended by Orkel) -

http://lieroxtreme.thegaminguniverse.com/ X

---

This is a fun game that's like a real-time version of worms. Tons of a
wacky weapons, destructable environments, multiplayer action, and much
more. Also, there are plenty of different skins that you can choose
from, including 8-bit Mario, which sold me completely on this game.

N (Recommended by Darky) - http://www.harveycartel.org/metanet/n.html XX

---

N is a free sidescrolling game that's said to be reminisent of Lode-Runner. It has some neat, stylish graphics.

Scorched 3D - http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/ X

---

Scorched 3D is a 3D (dur!) version of the game Scorched Earth, which is
a turn-based artillery game (Think Worms). For a free game, it has some
impressive features, such as completely destructable environments and
random map generation. The website obviously isn't all that sexy, but
the game itself really isn't all that bad looking.

Glest - http://glest.org/

---

Glest is a free RTS game in a fantasy setting (Warcraft 3-ish). Check out the website for more information.

Wulfram 2 - http://www.wulfram.com/

---

This is a free, massively multiplayer online FPS, that the site claims,
has quite a steep learning curve. Check out the site for more
information.

Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far - http://www.closecombatseries.net/CCS...download&cid=7

"A Bridge Too Far offers real-time action that makes the battlefield come

alive with the sights and sounds of war. Your men in the trenches behave

like real soldiers—they react realistically to the stress of combat and are

affected by their fatigue level, ability, physical and mental

condition, and other factors. Depending on these factors,

time to respond, or not respond at all. However, your

soldiers’ reactions are not out of your hands. Your ability to

take control and make timely decisions determines

whether, and how quickly, your men respond to orders.

In addition to battlefield tactics, A Bridge Too Far adds a

strategic layer. You are faced with the challenge of managing

a limited set of resources, particularly if you are

playing the Allied side. In the actual Operation Market-

Garden, the Allies outdistanced their supply lines, while

the Germans retreated into theirs. Regardless of which side

you play, you need to plan an overall strategy, evaluate

your status throughout the game, and decide how to best

allocate your resources.

When you play the game, your short-term decisions affect

your long-term success. Information about supplies, troop

morale, health, equipment, and which maps you control is" - The game's manual.

Trackmania: Nations - http://www.trackmanianations.com/ XX

---

This is an amazingly fun racing game, that by the looks of the site,
you would think it was just your average, generic racing sim. IT'S NOT.
I'd like to think of this game as Super Monkey Ball, but in racing game
form. All kinds of crazy loops and jumps for your car to overcome.
Also, this game installs Starforce on your computer. You should
probably do a google search and see if this bugs you any. It really is
a great game, however, and I'd hate for anyone to miss out.

Rakion (Recommended by TiGeR) - http://rakion.softnyx.net/

"Rakion: A 3D game where you can choose between 5 classes - Mage (My

team as Gunbound. In my opinion it's better than Gunbound." - TiGeR.

Advance Wars By Web - http://awbw.amarriner.com/ XX

---

This is a site that lets you play the popular GameBoy Advance game
"Advance Wars" over the web, against other players, with nothing more
than your browser. The person who made the site is still working on
adding more of the game's content, such as the AWDS units and COs. If
you've never played an Advance Wars game before, there's also a section
that teachs you a little bit about it so you can enjoy it as well.

Charred Dirt - http://www.charreddirt.com/ X

---

This is a remake, of sorts, of the game 'Scorched Earth'. While I've
never actually played the original Scorched Earth, I guess it's what
spawned games like Worms and Gunbound. So basically, you take turns on
a 2D play field and blow the crap out of eachother and the environment.
In this game, however, when you blow stuff up the broken pieces don't
float in the air, they fall to the ground in a rather neat effect. I
suppose this could be a fairly fun way to throw away an afternoon if
you have some friends to play with, but since there never seems to be
any servers online, I'd just stick with Gunbound.

Anarchy Online - http://www.anarchy-online.com/

'wall' or set up certain variables. Additionally, you can make a line
segment a 'muscle', and have it fire at a set moment, helping you build
walkers, cars and the like. Some people have amde insanely complex
vehicles and scenes, some using mathematical formulas, and some
examples are included in the 'game'. I highly suggest it, it's very fun

"Steel Panthers: World at War is a tactical level, World War II era,
historical wargame. This is a very highly refined version of Steel
Panthers III, placed in the Steel Panthers I game scale. We used Steel

yet created. The original game series was designed by Gary Grigsby,
Keith Brors and Joel Billings. SP:WaW is a hex based, top down view,
alternating turn ("I go, you go" or IGOUGO) game design. SP:WaW also
includes a timed play feature, giving each player a specific amount of
time to conduct his turn before it ends and his opponent's turn begins.
Armor, gun and vehicle units are represented by individual icons. Each
infantry squad can have up to 25 men in it. Machine guns, mortars and
artillery units are also realisticaly portrayed and crewed. Each hex
represents 50 yards (meters) of the virtual battlefield, with many new

Cave Story - http://www.acid-play.com/download/cave-story/ XX

---

"I just finished playing through this game, and I was blown away by how
awesome it is, Especially considering it's free and only 1mb.

So, pretty much, it's a sidescrolling game that's kind of like a mix
between Metroid, Zelda, and Contra. There's a nice assortment of
weapons to choose from by the time you beat the game (which I think
took me about somewhere between 7-9 hours), all of which have their own
use at certain times in the game. Also, by picking up experience
dropped by enemies, you can level your guns up to become even more
powerful. However, if you take damage, the weapon you're holding will
lose experiences.

And to make things better, the game also contains a fairly nice
storyline to keep you hooked up until you actually beat it. At the
beginning of the game, it's likely you're not going to know what's
going on, and that's okay, as I think that's the way I think they ment
it to be. From what I've heard, the game also has mutliple endings.

The game has a very retro soundtrack. It made me feel like I was
playing a NES or Gameboy game (Well, with considerably better
graphics). I'll admit that at the start of the game, the music got on
my nerves a little bit, but as I played on, I wasn't really bugged by
it at all." - My review.

"Head Over Heels was released, um, a while ago. Around about 1987 if I

quite the bestest thing ever. Not only was it a huge game for it's
time, it also had great graphics and was very addictive - if somewhat
punishing in its difficulty level. The variety in the locations was
amazing and the challenges brilliantly designed. Quite rightly it was
awarded with pretty much every accolade that could be bestowed upon it
by the various magazines. Even today it still stands as a brilliantly
designed title and has never really been bettered in the isometric

a 2D platforming game where you play as a living blue ball. The best

mixed with Metroid. Try to beat different areas to get new ball
materials which allows you to get to new areas.

Toribash - http://www.toribash.com/ XX

---

Toribash is the most unique fighting game you will likely ever play.
Honestly, this game makes Super Smash Brothers look like Street Fighter
II. Basically, it's a turn-based game where you get a ragdoll and you
have to extend, contract, hold, and relax different joints to get him
to do what you want him to. It's fairly complex, but once you find out
how to play it's really fun.

F.E.A.R. Combat - http://www.joinfear.com/main XX

---

The entire multiplayer portion of last year's commercial game 'F.E.A.R'
was recently released for free under the title "F.E.A.R Combat". It's
probably the most quality first person deathmatch game you'll be able
to download for free. Be warned, however, that the required specs for
this game are some of the heaviest for a freeware game.

Aces High II - http://www.hitechcreations.com/frindex.html

---

Aces High II is a vehicular combat game that really isn't entirely
free. As far as I know, the only limit is that you can't join the lobby
to find a server after two weeks. However, if you have friends to play
with it shouldn't be a problem.

Penumbra - http://frictionalgames.com/penumbra XX

---

Penumbra is a heavily physics oriented survival horror game. It's more
of a puzzle game than it is an action game, as you never actually get a
gun. The graphics are quite impressive, but with that comes some heavy
required specs. Defintely worth a look, it's quite scary.

SOUND/MUSIC/MEDIA RELATED

FL Studio - http://www.flstudio.com/ XX

---

FL Studio is a music making program, mainly for making techno. While
it's only a demo, you can still do some pretty neat things with FL

it being a demo, is that it doesn't allow you to save and work on your
songs later, but you can still export them to MP3 or WAV.

Audacity - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ X

---

This is one of the best free audio editing/voice recording programs
that you're probably going to find. If you're stuck with the standard
windows voice recording program, be sure to download this, as it has
many nice features. You can add reverb, you can change the pitch of the
sound without slowing it down or speeding it up, change the speed
without changing the pitch, and tons of other cool things.

OverClocked ReMix - http://www.ocremix.org/ XX

While this isn't a program, it's certainly a free thing anybody who

quality free music, all of which are video game remixes. I'm sure
you're thinking, "Oh, boy... more video game tunes with a standard
techno beat behind them. Yay.", but suprisingly that isn't the case.
There are many, many unique and original remixes to be found here.

VideoLAN - http://www.videolan.org/

---

This is a media program that can play just about every media file that
you can think of! Check out the link above for more information.

Pandora - http://www.pandora.com/

---

Pandora helps you find more of the types of music you like. It's fairly
new to me, but check out the website. It's pretty neat. This has been
recommended by a few people, the first being Mr.Anderson.

GoldWave - http://www.goldwave.com/ XX

---

GoldWave is another audio recording/editing program that is just as
good, if not better, than audacity. It's a great program, but it isn't
ENTIRELY free. After you do a bunch of things in one session, it will
start bugging you because you don't have a registered version. Check
out the website for more information.

Newgrounds Audio Portal - http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/ X

---

I know that I've already linked to Newgrounds below, but this seems
like a part of the site that is commonly overlooked. While this is a
community music portal in which anyone can submit something, there is
actually quite a bit of quality music to be found here of many, many
varieties.

Metroid Metal - http://www.metroidmetal.com/index.html XX

---

The Metroid/Super Metroid/Metroid Prime soundtracks done in an
impressive metal style. While there may not be the quantity of music

assured that it's all quality stuff.

---

XMPlay - http://www.un4seen.com/xmplay.html

While XMPlay may not be as popular as media players like WinAmp, it's
been said that it can pack quite a media punch. Check out the website
for more information.

SHOUTcast - http://www.shoutcast.com/

---

A bunch of free internet radio stations for you to listen to!

8bitpeoples - http://www.8bitpeoples.com/ X

---

Love video games? Love video game music? Well, you're not going to find
anything here found in a game, but much of this music carries on the
catchy legacy of music created on systems like the NES. Honestly, not
all of it is that great, but I admit to finding some music that I
really liked here, while I found much of it to be "Let's create as much
glass-shattering noise as we possibly can and pass it off as music!"
Not all of it is that bad though.

SoundClick - http://www.soundclick.com/ X

---

SoundClick is a site that lets anyone submit their own music - this, of
course, means you're likely to find more crap here than you're going to
find gems. That's not to say that everything here is horrible, but the
good stuff you're going to have to find on your own.

Live 365 - http://www.live365.com/

---

Another free internet radio station. To death metal, to happy techno music, they seem to have a lot of stations to choose from.

Musicmatch Jukebox - http://www.musicmatch.com/

your music, giving you ultimate control of your music experience. With
a whole new range of library, playlist, and portable device controls,
Musicmatch Jukebox is more powerful and easier to use than ever
before." - The Website. It also claims to be 'the world's best music
player'. That's a lot to live up to, but you never know.

WavePad - http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/

---

"This audio editing software is a full featured professional sound
editor for Windows. It lets you make and edit voice and other audio
recordings. When editing audio files you can cut, copy and paste parts
of recordings and, if required, add effects like echo, amplification
and noise reduction. WavePad works as a wav editor or mp3 editor but it
also supports a number of other file formats including vox, gsm, real
audio, au, aif, flac, ogg and more." - The Website.

featured in Darwinia, but they still have it all, and more, for
download here.

Lemon Demon - http://www.lemondemon.com/ X

---

Lemon Demon wrote the music for the popular flash cartoon "The Ultimate
Showdown of Ultimate Destiny". While not all of his music is up for
download, there's certainly enough of it to be worth your time.

OTHER

Mozilla Firefox - http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ XX

---

Firefox is, considered by most, the best web browser that is currently
available. There are tons of neat features, such as tabbed browsing,
skins, and tons of different extensions. If you're still using Internet

---

Opera is yet another web browser, one that some say is even better than
firefox. While I don't use this program myself, I suggest you check it
out. Perhaps I'm missing out on something really good?

AdAware (Recommended by gt500k) - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ XX

it. Highly recommended!

---

Foxit reader is pretty much Adobe Reader... but is only 1mb in size! Read the site for more information.

best in file compression software. You're probably going to need this
to download many things, including RAR, ZIP, and all of those other
compression files nobody gives a damn about.

ccCleaner (Recommended originally by RCG_Savage) - http://www.ccleaner.com/ XX

---

I haven't heard of or used this program, but it has been recommended by
a few people (RCG_Savage being the first in a PM) so I put it up here.
I guess it removes spyware and cleans up some junk on your hardrive.
Check out the website for more information.

Xpize (Recommended by RCG_Savage) - http://xpero.msfn.org/

From their site: PeerGuardian 2 is Phoenix Labs premier IP blocker for

how long you play certain games and such. There is tons of other
features as well. Highly recommended!

GAIM - http://gaim.sourceforge.net/

proved wrong. This is a very good AntiSpyware program and I highly
recommend it!

Cedega (Recommended by GlofuS) - http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_cedega_home.html

---

"Cedega allows Windows-based games to run on Linux, out-of-the-box,
seamlessly and transparently. With Cedega, TransGaming does not require
any access to a game's source code but, rather, runs the Windows
executable on Linux. In simplified terms, Cedega loads a game's binary
into memory on a Linux system and then dynamically links to code that
provides an implementation of the Win32 APIs that the program is using.
The APIs that Windows games are mostly built on top of are primarily
based on Microsoft's DirectX system. These APIs include facilities for
handling 3D graphics (Direct3D), mouse and keyboard input
(DirectInput), audio (DirectSound), and so on. TransGaming works to
create Linux compatible versions of these APIs that work on top of the
Linux equivalents such as OpenGL, X11, and the OSS and ALSA sound APIs.
An important attribute of Cedega is the complete support for third
party engines and SDKs such as Bink, Lithtech, Miles, Havok,
Renderware, etc. Cedega is the culmination of several years of effort
on these API and our engineering team's knowledge of DirectX is
probably second only to Microsoft's own.

Cedega support hundreds of the top Windows games on Linux, including
such blockbuster hits as Max Payne 2, GTA Vice City, Battlefield 1942,
Battlefield: Vietnam, WarCraft III, Diablo II, Half-Life, just to name
a few; MMPORG games such as City of Heroes, Star Wars Galaxies,
EverQuest and many many more are also supported." - The website.

ENTERTAINMENT

Homestar Runner - http://www.homestarrunner.com/ X

---

This is a site littered with flash cartoons featuring some really,
really strange characters and humor to match. While a lot of it may
seem childish at times, many of the Strong Bad Emails are priceless.

Penny Arcade - http://www.penny-arcade.com/ X

---

Penny Arcade is very popular web comic with plenty of video game jokes and otherwise. Quite a good web comic.

VG Cats - http://www.vgcats.com/ XX

---

Another popular video game humor web comic, featuring two cats (a gray
and a pink one) as the main characters. Another good web comic.

Newgrounds - http://www.newgrounds.com XX

---

Newgrounds is the biggest portal of flash animation that currently
exists on the internet. Games, movies... there is a considerably good
chance you'll find you like here! However, there are tons of ads.

Ctrl+Alt+Del - http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/

---

Yet another very popular web comic.

Concerned - http://www.hlcomic.com/ XX

---

If the name doesn't already give it away, the comic is based in the
Half-Life universe. The comic is made using Facepunch's very own, you
guessed it - Garry's Mod. However, this is not just your average
Garry's Mod comic. The difference, you ask? It's actually funny.

Catharsis - http://www.catharsiscomic.com/ X

---

A crazy comic following the life of a women named Gwen who has a pet
dragon. Probably the only good web comic that I can think of that's
made by a girl (girls on the internet? LIES!), and it's actually fairly
witty. You should check it out.

Cyanide and Happiness - http://www.explosm.net/ XX

You're the Man Now Dog - http://www.ytmnd.com/ XX

---

One of the strangest entertainment sites you're likely to come across,
but it tends to grow on you. By putting images and sounds together,
people make YTMNDs. I'm not really sure how else to explain it. If
you're curious, check it out for yourself.

Foshata - http://foshata.com/ X

---

In my opinion, Foshata is on par with You're the Man Now Dog in
downright weirdness. Mainly, there's some weird japanese commercials
(There's only 9 to choose from as I'm writing this), and you can add
your own captions to what you think they're saying. Despite the fact
that you're going to be saying the same clips over and over again, it
doesn't get boring too quickly. I'm not saying they shouldn't get some
more clips, though.

Deviant Art - http://www.deviantart.com/ X

---

Who doesn't enjoy a little bit of beautiful art from time to time? On
Deviant Art, you have art spanning from eye-popping to total crap
(coughmecough), from abstract to disturbingly realistic. You'll even
find Flash movies here, amoung other things. If you're into art, you're
looking for something neat to use as a desktop, or wanting to show off
your mad drawing skillz, I wouldn't say this is a bad place to look.

Space Tree The Space Tree (Recommended by Geiger count) - http://spacetree.keentoons.com/ X

---

A flash cartoon series about Space Tree, the Space Tree. If I had to
choose one word to describe it, it would be "What the fuck?!" but
that's three words.

Uncyclopeida - http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

A parody of Wikipedia, this site is filled with tons of humor and bogus material.

Bonus Stage - http://www.bonusstages.com/ XX

Just choose the characters, the backdrop, and what you want them to say
and - instant comics.

instead of some weird, egg-headed guy answering you questions, you get
a ninja instead! AWESOME!!!

COMPUTER GAMING WORLD'S 101 FREE GAME'S LIST!

Okay, I do not claim that I made this list. Also, so of these games
might not be entirely free. While it's true that there ARE in fact many
free games on this list, there is also a fare ammount of shareware and
demos. I suggest you give a look anyway. It's not organized like mine
because I'm simply too lazy to do this with 101 games. Yeah, I know
this paragraph is getting long enough as it is, but I'd just like to
make it clear that there may be things on this list that are also on
mine. Now let's begin, shall we?

few pages are 100 percent free with no strings attached."

-----------

ACTION, RUN, JUMP, AND SHOOT

Akuji the Demon

URL: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3135544

From Japan, the home of Castlevania and sushi, comes a surprisingly
good free platform game. Don't mind the Japanese.think of it as a short
break in the action.

Blitz 1941

URL: http://www.blitz1941.com/Blitz.1941

This MMO import is coming to America, and it looks hot. Going back to
WWII, you take command of vehicles, form clans, and wreak havoc.

Chainsaw Maniac

URL: http://www.chainsawmaniac.com

It's designed like those old-school Nintendo Game & Watch handhelds; dodge left and right to stab zombies.

Hidden and Dangerous

URL: http://www.acid-play.com/download/hidden-an-dangerous/

Hidden and Dangerous puts you in control of an elite World War II squad
that goes behind enemy lines. Wait long enough after the original
game's release and they make a deluxe version. Wait even longer and you
can download the game for free.

Hot Potato Online

URL: http://www.hotpotatoonline.com

If only every sport had a ball that comes with a short fuse. This free
action game has you hurling explosive spuds against bots or buddies.

Jumper: Redux

URL: http://www.helixgamesinc.com

There's nothing sophisticated about a tiny red box of a creature that
jumps over obstacles, but that doesn't stop this game from being a
good, quick time killer.

Nanaca Crash!!

URL: http://nanaca.narr.as/

This little Web game brought the office to a standstill for a couple
days. This is the premise: You're a schoolgirl on a bike. You have to
slam into a guy at top speed and send him flying as far as you can.

Ocular Ink

URL: http://pistachioproductions.com/dart/

Where to even start with this acid-trip-induced game? Let's see, you're
a huge rolling eyeball. Once you paint patterns on the ground, you can
do everything from teleporting to flinging rocks. Sounds normal enough.

Room War

URL: http://www.acid-play.com/download/room-war/

Aliens are invading your bedroom! Get in your spaceship and
defend.your.computer? Riiiiiight. Don't expect much gameplay--it's more
an interesting use of a 3D modeled room.

Runman's Monster Fracas

URL: http://coolmoose.net/v4/cmp.php

A giant monster is chasing you! Run for it! Simple. Addictive. Fun.

SDI

URL: http://cinemaware.com/cisgame_sdi.asp

Don't forget this oldie-but-goodie in which you defend the Earth from
space invaders. Cinemaware opens its vault to bring you this classic
action-strategy game.

Sea of Chaos

URL: http://digipen.edu/main/Gallery_Games_2004

Take to the high seas, set sail, and blow the living crap out of
anything that moves. Outfit your boat and go through the brief
single-player campaign or fight off the pirates on the Internet.

Seiklus

URL: http://www.autofish.net/clysm/games/seiklus/

Why is it that we're attracted to strange games? Well, maybe you need
to try this for yourself. This exploration game has you jumping over
snails and spelunking inside trees.

ACTION/RPG - LIVING IN A FANTASY WORLD

Cave Story

URL: http://www.acid-play.com/download/cave-story

You get it all right here. Action. Adventure. RPG elements. Platforming. And it all comes in under 1MB.

Daikatana--Game Boy Color

URL: http://www.rome.ro/games_daikatana.htm

Straight from the homepage of John Romero comes his blessing to
download the Game Boy Color version of Daikatana. Here's the crazy
part: It's actually not bad for an adventure/RPG.

Dungeon Siege: Copperhead

URL: http://www.planetcopperhead.com/main.htm

Proof that some good things can come from Dungeon Siege, this sci-fi
total conversion is a free game that's good enough to pay for. More
interesting news: A Copperhead take on Far Cry is also in the works.

Dungeon Siege: Ultima V: Lazarus

URL: http://www.u5lazarus.com/

More good things from Dungeon Siege. These guys have re-created the
classic Ultima V with this Dungeon Siege mod. We dug it so much that we
gave it a review (check out page 88).

Eternal Daughter

URL: http://www.acid-play.com/download/eternal-daughter/

Addictive, fun, and in the vein of all those early '90s Nintendo RPGs,
Eternal Daughter is a must-play bit of freeware, especially for
Nintendo fanboys.

Flight of the Amazon Queen

URL: http://www.scummvm.org/

FOTAQ is a throwback to the simpler days of LucasArts-style adventure
games. This classic has it all: crazy Nazi scientists, great dialogue,
and lots of puns! If you want the whole experience, download the CD
version.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhik...me_nolan.shtml

The classic Infocom text adventure is back, it's an online Web game, and now, technically, it's a graphic adventure.

Mount & Blade

URL: http://www.taleworlds.com/mb_download.html

This isn't a typical RPG. Sure, it's got your standard stat building,
but combat takes place with third-person action. It's a little
primitive but certainly worth the free download.

Project Joe

URL: http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,433

This demo of an adventure game in progress looks great, as long as you
don't mind the fact that the adventure is almost over before it's
begun. Still, download it now to get a sample of things to come in the
final game.

Samorost 2

URL: http://www.samorost2.net/

This Flash graphic adventure has a unique style all its own. The online
experience will take you to trippy alien worlds as you hunt and click
onscreen to see what happens next.

The Ur-Quan Masters

URL: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

See the stars! Ah, the classic Star Control 2, now back in an
authentic, free emulation. Explore the universe, exploit trade tariffs,
and revel in interstellar combat. We wish more games like this were
still around.

Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space

URL: http://www.shrapnelgames.com/digital...d_worlds/6.htm

Wish granted! This tribute to Star Control 2 tries and succeeds at
capturing the flavor of the original game but has vastly improved
graphics.

MMORPGS WITH NO MONEY DOWN!

Anarchy Online

URL: http://www.anarchy-online.com/

This great sci-fi MMO game is blazing trails. The basic version is
fully free--you just need to deal with in-game ads and billboards. It's
just a little distracting when you're blowing away enemies and you see
"Wanta Fanta?" ads.

Dofus

URL: http://www.dofus.com

Entirely Flash-based and beautifully rendered, this tactical fantasy
MMO is free to play on just about any PC. The screenshot to the right
shows what this will look like in your Web browser. The only real
downside we can come up with is its unfortunate name.

Fly for Fun

URL: http://flyff.gpotato.com/

Looking for a free online way to get your Diablo fix or just jonesing
for some anime-style fantasy? Grab a broomstick or hoverboard and soar.

Maplestory

URL: http://www.mapleglobal.com (Internet Explorer only)

Yet another free MMO, MapleStory is sure to hook you with its deviously
cute graphics, but this 2D side-scroller isn't for all action seekers.

Runuo Server

URL: http://www.runuo.com

Ultima Online isn't dead. Far from it. Download this server program and
you can give the classic MMO a new home with this emulator.

ROAD RAGE

Machines of Destruction

URL: http://www.faind.com/file.asp?id=16

Gentlemen, start your engines. This free multiplayer death race is good for a quick fix of burning rubber--and opponents.

Mexican Motor Mafia

URL: http://www.scienceoftomorrow.com/mmm_main.htm

Hit the road and remember to reload. This highly styled top-down
drive-by shooter is reminiscent of the early GTA games (don't believe
us? Check the screenshot below). The big differences are that there are
no innocent bystanders and you don't ever get out of the driver's seat.
Earn bounties, bigger guns, and cooler rides--not bad for shareware.

Wild Metal Country

URL: http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/wmc.html

Rockstar has done a lot more than just release controversial games.
Years before GTA, there was Wild Metal Country, now available for free
on the company's website. Get in the cockpit of one of several tanks
and lay waste to the countryside.

ARCADE - SAVE YOURSELF THE QUARTER AND A TRIP TO THE MALL

Arcade Air Hockey 3D

URL: http://avagames.net/airhockey/airhockey-download.htm

This is about as straightforward as it gets: a 3D, spacey version of arcade air hockey.

Arm Joe

URL: http://armjoe.hp.infoseek.co.jp/ArmJoe.htm

Apparently, the French Revolution had its share of strife.
Y'know--fireballs, dragon punches, and a flurry of kicks. This 2D
fighting game is actually a messed-up take on Les Miserables. Seriously.

Beats of Rage

URL: http://www.acid-play.com/download/beats-of-rage/

Double Dragon and Final Fight--two classic beat-em-ups lost to the ages
but far from forgotten. You won't get much in the way of a story here.
Just pick one of three characters, mash the buttons, lather, rinse,
repeat.

BMX Park

URL: http://www.**********/articles/bmxpark.html

Tony Hawk's got nothing on this bit of webware. If you're aching to
grind rails or pull off tricks on your lunch break, BMX Park will give
you that "extreme" buzz. Rad, dude!

Crush!

URL: http://coolmoose.net/v4/cmp.php

Remember that old arcade game Rampage? So do the guys who made this
stylish experiment in mass destruction. Punch a building, chow down on
some civilians, and enjoy.

Dad 'N Me

URL: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/254456

Is anything more fun than beating up little kids on the playground?
Didn't think so. From the messed-up minds that brought you Alien
Hominid comes a Final Fight-style beat-em-up Web game in which you're a
muscle-bound kid who looks like a cross between Jason and Hulk Hogan.

Diner Dash

URL: http://www.playfirst.com/r/p1/game/dinerdash

Being a waitress sucks. Ask one sometime. Better yet, check out this
simple, addictive bit of shareware that improves upon the classic
arcade game Tapper.

Gravity Drive V1.0

URL: http://www.elementxgames.com/index.html

Raise your hand if you remember Turrican, the game about a human in a
robotic tux that can jump and shoot at anything in its way. This is the
same concept, but it looks a whole lot better.

Icy Tower

URL: http://www.freelunchdesign.com/games.php

There's nothing wrong with a short, mindless arcade platformer, even if
it features a main character named "Harold the Homeboy" who wants to
climb the titular Icy Tower.

Miki the Fighting Girl

URL: http://www.ausystem.org/muteki/

This 2D fighting game is still a work in progress, but we had to
include it in this list for one simple reason: hot anime nurses beating
the crap out of each other.

Ninja Loves Pirate

URL: http://student.gamemaker.nu/~patlil0...injapirate.htm

Like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, this action/platform/adventure game
brings two of our favorite things--ninjas and pirates--together at
last. Prepare to kick it old school in this eight-level demo.

Rocketbowl Plus

URL: http://www.largeanimal.com

Open courses and rocket-powered bowling balls: That's our kind of game.
If this crazy take on bowling were in your local bar, you'd be playing
it until they kicked you out.

Rumble Box

URL: http://phackett.com/rumblebox/

This one looks like a bunch of balls and cubes in an arena version of
Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Robots. Beat the stuffing out of oncoming geometry
and climb out of the box. Sound simple? It is. It's also lots of fun.

Shot Online

URL: http://www.filefront.com

Time to go online against others and see if you can shave some strokes
off the back nine in this free golf MMO. Yes, folks, it's a real
Cinderella story out of nowhere. The only question on our minds,
though: "Who's going to roleplay the gopher?"

Super Cosplay War Ultra

URL: http://go.to/alicuu

You ever see those pictures of anime or videogame fans who get all
trussed up like their favorite characters? Yeah, well, apparently now
they are ready to throw down in a 2D fighting game to settle who is the
hardest of the hardcore. The only thing you have to worry about
(besides laughing) is entering this password to unlock the game: http://www.fkdigital.net.

Switchball

URL: http://www.atomicelbow.com

This cross between Super Monkey Ball and Marble Madness is a great
little arcade puzzle game. Using NovodeX physics software, it's also a
great test of Ageia's physics cards--if they ever actually come out.

Virtual Pinball

URL: http://www.vpforums.com/

Welcome back to the gray area of gaming: emulation. Virtual Pinball and
PinMAME are your gateways to playing a little silver ball. The only
problem is, it requires a little hunting to grab all the files you
need. Want the full story? Search Google for "Computer Gaming World:
Pinball Wizards.

WHEN FPS GOES FLAT

Codename: Gordon

URL: http://www.halflife2d.com/

Yeah, 3D shooters are nice, but even Gordon Freeman craves a little
old-school action every once in a while. While this may look like a
flattened version of Half-Life, it feels more like the classic
side-scrolling shooter Contra.

Halo Zero

URL: http://www.halozero.new.fr/

Gordon isn't the only one going 2D. Here, Master Chief gets the Contra makeover as well.

FIRST-PERSON SHOOTERS - WHEN YOU NEED A BIT OF ULTRAVIOLENCE

Battlefield 1942: BF40K

URL: http://www.battlefield40k.com/forums/

If you've dabbled in the awesome Warhammer 40,000 strategy games, it's
time to get your hands dirty with some futuristic combat. This mod
proves that there is still some life for the original Battlefield 1942.

Battlefield 2: Mercenaries V6.0

URL: http://www.mercenaries.dies-world.com/

Are your Battlefield battles not being all they can be? Mercenaries V6
adds a lot of extra tweaks to the already awesome Battlefield
experience. Also be sure to grab the optimized map pack.

Doom 3: Classic Doom

URL: http://www.cdoom.d3files.com/

Thanks to this mod, everything people loved about the original Doom is
back, but with a fresh coat of paint from the latest game's engine.

Doom 3: Dungeon Doom

URL: http://www.doom3.filefront.com/file/...nDOOM_XP;47406

Turn Doom 3 into an action-RPG? Why the hell not? This mod generates random mazes and monsters to take down.

Duck Doom Deluxe

URL: http://www.doom3.filefront.com/file/Duck_DOOM;46598

We can't think of a better way to shoot fowl than with a BFG. Take the
Nintendo classic Duck Hunt, add Doom's arsenal, and enjoy.

HL2: Exterminate

URL: http://www.varmvaffel.no-ip.com/varm...xterminate.htm

Here's a mod that's about as simple as it gets. Shoot anything that moves and just try to survive for as long as possible.

HL2: Combine Destiny

URL: http://www.cd.bounced.de/

The rebels hiding in Coonersville needed to be dealt with. First, the
Combine fired headcrab canisters to clean out any resistance. Now, a
sweeper squad has to take care of the zombies.

HL2: Dayhard

URL: http://www.smanu85.it/public/site_in...e.php?pag=news

Everyone always talks about Gordon Freeman. But does his brother,
Morgan, ever get any credit? Nooooo! Check out this comedic mod.

HL2: Dodgeball Alpha 6

URL: http://www.fileplanet.com

Those days of lobbing red rubber balls of doom in the school gym are
back thanks to this mod and the Havok physics in Half-Life 2.

HL2: Dystopia

URL: http://www.dystopia-game.com/

Cyberpunk team-based fighting at its finest, in mod form. Play in the
"real world" with guns or as a hacker in cyberspace to accomplish goals.

Marathon Trilogy

URL: http://www.trilogyrelease.bungie.org

Before Halo, Bungie cut its first-person-shooting teeth with a game
called Marathon. Want to see what the big deal was all about for Mac
users? Download the games--and a Mac emulator.

Rainbow Six 3: Iron Wrath

URL: http://www.fileplanet.com/154363/150000/fileinfo/Tom-Clancy's-Rainbow-Six-3:

-Iron-Wrath-Expansion-%5BUS%5D---Requires-Key!

Ubisoft delivers a fully free expansion for Rainbow Six 3, loaded with
six new weapons and a new seven-mission campaign. We wish more
publishers backed up their fans like this.

War Rock

URL: http://www.warrock.net/

Take a look at this screenshot and keep one thing in mind: This amazing
find is a fully free FPS game that's taking some potshots at
Battlefield 2. Just like the EA game you likely paid $50 for, War Rock
has stat tracking and a full complement of modern weapons. While it's
not quite ready to dethrone BF2, the price is certainly right.

PUZZLE GAMES - PUZZLE ME THIS

Blossom

URL: http://www.snowbeat.com/Games/EpAuulukpZbFAXovsG.php

The world's a little too drab. It's up to you, the Johnny Appleseed of
games, to plant stuff and strategically kill critters so that you can
bring color back to the world. Different, but stylish.

Deadly Rooms of Death

URL: http://www.drod.net/

How do you sum up DROD? It's not a puzzle game, it's not an action
game--it's a little of both. The basic, free version is a 2D classic.
DROD junkies will also be happy to know there's a 3D version available
at tlkgames.com.

Dyadin

URL: http://www.dyadin.com/links.php

Not recommended for the color-blind, this two-player cooperative game
requires two differently hued creatures to work together to open doors
and beat levels by mixing pigments.

Moleculous

URL: http://www.gametrust.com/moleculous/

Your lab partner is Dr. Von Leakentube for Moleculous. Solve his
addictive chemical puzzles alone or go head-to-head through the 40
mind-bending levels.

Shapes

URL: http://www.acid-play.com/download/shapes/

It's kind of like a turn-based Tetris with claustrophobia as you try to
cram odd shapes into a small space. We love foreign objects!

Siege

URL: http://www.faind.com/file.asp?id=2

Siege rides that fine line between a strategy and a puzzle game. As a general, you summon unit types by forming puzzle patterns.

Solid Balance

URL: http://solid-games.com/soga/solidbalance_en.htm

It takes a very steady hand.OK, wrong game, but think of Solid Balance as a PC version of Jenga--minus the lameness.

Strange Attractors

URL: http://www.ominousdev.com

Here's an action-puzzle game that comes with just one control input:
the spacebar. Hit it and you control the gravity between the ship and
the objects in the area.

The Fool's Errand

URL: http://www.thefoolsgold.com/downloads/games-windows.htm

This classic collection of brain-breaking puzzles may not look pretty, but the important part is that it will kill lots of time.

Whizball!

URL: http://kids.discovery.com/games/whiz...whizzball.html

Those of you who want another shot at playing a game similar to the
classic puzzler The Incredible Machine need only to look for WhizBall!
on the Discovery Kids website.

Zoomines

URL: http://www.yakyak.org/viewtopic.php?t=34125

This poor man's (hey, it is free) version of the PSP hit Lumines is fun--but a little weak in the music department.

SHOOTERS - BLAST FIRST, ASK QUESTIONS LATER

Escort Wing

URL: http://www.idevgames.com/contest/dow...ls.php?file=26

There's just something about simple top-down shooters like Escort
Wing.... Here, along with your allies, you protect carriers from
incoming enemy fire.

Global Defense Network

URL: http://www.evertt.com/moreinfo_gdn.htm

GDN is a stationary skeet shoot. In some ways, it reminds us of the
electronica shooter, Rez. Target incoming objects and enjoy the light
show. The added bonus is that your shots (and the explosions) make
sweet music.

Gunz: the Duel

URL: http://www.gunzonline.com

This free MMO action-heavy shooter has been floating around the Web in
Asia for a while. While still a beta, this feels like a running,
gunning version of what The Matrix Online should've been.

Maelstrom 3.0

URL: http://www.devolution.com/~slouken/Maelstrom/

Think Asteroids, but colorful and free.

Mono

URL: http://www.binaryzoo.com/games/mono/

Binaryzoo.com sums Mono up the best on its website: "part Asteroids,
part Robotron, part Paint Shop Pro." This game is a trip.in more ways
than one. Drugs optional.

Robohorde

URL: http://www.fileplanet.com/159419/150...-3.0-Engine%5D

This tech demo is meant to show off what Intel's Hyper-Threading
Technology can do. If you've got Intel inside, give this 3D take on
Robotron a shot.

Space Corps 5: Doomsday

URL: http://spacecorps.bansheestudios.com/

This is a simple interstellar shoot-out in which space armadas try to
blast each other into space dust. Pick a side and wage war.

Gunroar Parsec47

URL: http://www.asahl-net.orjp/~cs8k-cyu/index_e.html

All those console junkies are making a big stink about Geometry Wars.
It's a 2D shooting game with classy vector graphics-and people are
paying for it on the Xbox 360. Let those poor suckers do whatever they
want. Right here, we hve two awesome shooters that you can download
right now for free. Then, if you go to ABA Games' site, there are even
more great games to choose from.

SIMULATIONS - YOU'RE IN CONTROL

Blockland

URL: http://www.blockland.us/index.asp

You used to build elaborate Lego fortresses. Now--by using this PC
version of this childhood activity--you don't have to sweat losing
those blocks.

Golf?

URL: http://www.golfquestionmark.com/

Honestly, we didn't even know how to categorize this game. You're
tooling around in a vector graphics cart. Cubist Tiger Woods action
figures march along. Basically, this game consists of screwed-up rounds
of high-art golf. Take some peyote and swing away.

Hacker V3.1

URL: http://home.iprimus.com.au/chenluu/hacker.html

Let's get this straight. You've watched WarGames 200 times and you know
that you are sooo much more 3L33t than Matthew Broderick. Prove it with
this hacking sim.

Hot Shot Business

URL: http://www.disney.go.com/hotshot/hsb.html

It's a good thing that Disney is teaching kids early on to run a
business with this Web game--it's not like we want them to enjoy their
youth. Still, this is an excellent business sim.

Ore No Ryomi 2: the Restaurant

URL: http://www.vertigogaming.net/onrpage.htm

You ready to run your own restaurant into the ground? We sure are!
Manage a fast-food joint, create recipes, and order advertising--all
while making sure the patrons are happy. Hell, there is even a
bartending minigame where you master pouring the perfect pint.

SPACE CASES

Allegiance

URL: http://research.microsoft.com/research/allegiance/

Microsoft's multiplayer space shooter was way ahead of its time. Strap
into various cockpits, form squadrons, and fight online with this game
now that it's available for free.

Space Merchants: Conquerors

URL: http://www.dataweb.sk/projektsm/dow.htm

Space Merchants follows in a long line of spacefaring sims and
impresses with its amazing amount of style. The controls are simple and
the graphics are beautiful--perfect for first-timers who want to think
they are Han Solo for at least 5 minutes. If only it didn't take years
to get between planets in-system....

Star Wraith 2

URL: http://darkbasic.thegamecreators.com...case_view&i=64

If you've got what it takes to rip off Wing Commander..err.be an ace
space pilot, then ride in Star Wraith's cockpit and try to survive in
hostile territory. This freebie is a teaser for the rest of the series.

STRATEGY - CHIN-STROKING MASTERMINDS NEED ONLY APPLY

Curator Defense

URL: http://www.davidbhowe.net/cd/

Damn museum guests, always screwing up the exhibits! Someone needs to
put a stop to them. Bet you never knew so many machine-gun turrets were
actually in an art gallery.

Defender of the Crown

URL: http://cinemaware.com/clsgame_dotc.asp"

Take Risk and wrap it around a bunch of minigames. This simple notion
is what made DOTC a classic back in the days of the Amiga. Now you can
grab the full game gratis.

Food Force

URL: http://www.food-force.com/

Who says that games can't be positive influences? This strategy-sim
from the United Nations World Food Programme has you helping
impoverished third-world nations and shows you how to help.

Ground Control

URL: http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/groundcontrol/

This squad-based RTS doesn't get the credit it should. It's got a
decent design and no resource-juggling BS, plus you can download the
full version of the game for free. There's even the promise that the
much-improved Ground Control II: Operation Exodus will be made
available soon.

S.W.I.N.E.

URL: http://www.gamershell.com/download_11942.shtml

Following the Command & Conquer school of RTS thought, this game is
a little different: Here you're fending off attacks from an army of
hostile pigs. Cry havoc and let loose the hogs of war! Sorry about
that--couldn't resist.

Tribal Trouble

URL: http://tribaltrouble.com/

A gang of bloodthirsty--and incredibly stupid--Vikings get stranded on
a tropical island, and the natives aren't too pleased. There goes the
neighborhood in this slightly goofy RTS.

Warcraft III: Divine Right

URL: http://www.campaigncreations.org/warcraft/divineright/

This total conversion for WarCraft III sure is ambitious. Four races
square off, each thinking they are the chosen ones. Throw in some
multiplayer and let the fun begin. The single-player campaign, while
not ready yet, should also be good.

Warhammer 40K: Depth of Heresy--Black Crusade

URL: http://dawnofwar.filefront.com/file/..._Crusade;50626

Was the Winter Assault expansion not enough for you? What? You want
more? This mod fleshes out the 40K universe with more units, abilities,
and weapons for both the space marines and the forces of Chaos. Still
not enough? The team promises upgrades for more races in later updates.

for Goon Broadcast System and it's an internet television station that
can be played with winamp or other media programs.

http://dictionary.reference.com/ - Dictionary.com is the perfect site for when you aren't sure of the meaning of a word or you're not sure of the spelling.

http://www.imageshack.us/ - Upload images here. In my opinion, this is the best place to upload images. No sign up, and it's very quick.

http://ihud.com/ - You
can upload files other than images here. My favorite file upload, as
there are no waiting lines or any other crap of that sort.

http://www.putfile.com/ - Upload your videos for others to see here!

https://secure.logmein.com/go.asp?page=home - Access your computer from anywhere! Seriously!

--------------------------

If you have anything you'd like to add, post a link and PLEASE post a
description. I'll probably put it up here even if you don't, but
there's a good chance I'm not going to know about the program so the
description will be very small.

--------------------------

I am also accepting some help from you guys, such as reporting software
that shouldn't be up here because they have spyware and whatnot, giving
me better descriptions for programs that have very undescritive ones,
pointing out errors I have made, etc, etc.
